First of all, I’m a spender.  I LOVE my Target runs, Old Navy’s website and heck, I even like strolling the aisles of Walgreens to see what new shampoos and snacks I need.
But lately, I’ve been thinking, what if I took all of my Target & Walgreen money and transferred it into my savings account instead?  What if I skipped the McDonald’s drive-thru($1 Dr.Peppers!!!) all month, that alone would be AT LEAST $30.  And what if I skipped date nights and lipstick parties(yes, there is such a thing) and imagine if I canceled cable and baked the birthday cake from scratch instead of buying it at the grocery store??  If I could do this for one month, I think I could save hundreds…not eating out for our family of 6 would be HUGE!  And if this no-spend thing became a habit…my finances would be unstoppable.  But I digress…baby steps.  Could you do it for one month?  One week?
Just a little something to think about if you are trying to save for a down payment on a new home.  The satisfaction of a fun Target run is awesome for a few moments but the satisfaction of saving enough to sit at the closing table and being handed the keys to your dream home will be celebrated for years to come.
Just a little challenge to you from me…give it a try and it might just not be as hard as you think!
